Fairhaven Health Agent Warns of Tick, Mosquito Risks Heading Into Summer

FAIRHAVEN — June 20, 2023 — Fairhaven health officials issue tick and mosquito safety guidance ahead of summer. Health Agent David Flaherty presented a public education session to the Board of Health on June 20, covering Lyme disease prevention and the risks of eastern equine encephalitis and West Nile virus. Flaherty noted that triple E has produced fewer than 100 cases in Massachusetts since 1938, but that roughly half of those infected in the state have died, with most survivors left permanently disabled. More than 60 of the state's cases have come from Plymouth and Norfolk counties, placing southeastern Massachusetts in a historically elevated risk zone. The most recent regional outbreak, from 2010 to 2012, resulted in nine cases and four fatalities. Flaherty urged residents to use CDC-approved repellents, eliminate standing water, wear protective clothing outdoors, and call the Health Department at 508-979-4023, extension 8130, with questions.
